There is a flicker in your eyes

Just after your sharp reply

As if the fire in your core

Flared up past the top of your head.

The intensity makes me take a step back

And I see you pause for a second

To regain control and change your tone

Answering with measured politeness.

Every time we have an exchange like this

I wish that I'd taken the time to read you first

Perhaps I could have said something different

or not said anything at all.

Minutes, hours, days go by.
