Not Alone

Today I saw you die.

I was there in your last moments
as you writhed and shook,
and then slowly gave up;
your wings gently coming to rest
peacefully on the window sill.

Even though there was no other moth
present to share your final moment,

you were not alone.

And night arrives blazing as you ignite me.

Nowhere Boy

Love is so exquisitely painful
Love is so exquisitely beautiful
Those distant childhood memories
Flooding back like dreams at night
In light of those mirages of love and life
Suddenly your senseless actions
Actually make a little sense

If you had been part of a
normal family, a normal life,
Perhaps you might have always been
a normal person instead of
the man that you became,

a man who inspired the world.

To keep my mind

Missing you

On the streets

Hustling on the street
the hundreds of legs that move
so quickly, weaving in and out
of oncoming traffic, a bundle of
sneakers, pumps, boots and heels
that are jostling, vying for attention.

In these busy market streets
it seems the order of the day
is proving what you have inside
by what you wore today.

My body is crying for attention, my bones are crying to be shaken.
Feeling like I need to stretch until my spine

and be limber again.

It's so nutritious all this air

Be cautious with the minds

And let the air travel deep and long.
Through your nose into your trachea,
hurtling to the left and to the right bronchi,

passing through bronchioles to land

Reflection on Culture

Immediate confidence and assumptions based on nothing.
Delightful moments of instant gratification, until a singular happening leads to
sudden and merciless termination.

No second chances.

Initial distrust, building from timid and anemic interactions,
into something immovable, clinging stubbornly and perhaps stupidly, to the past,
in the face of present disappointment and vicious betrayal.

The doormat.

How do you make friends?

Roots

Listen to the faint and calming sound of a heartbeat
so familiar in it's muffled pulsing tones
that you can breathe deeply and imagine
free floating in a mysterious orange ocean

Now reach down to the roots of your family
Stretch those long tendrils deep into the earth
and draw upon the flowing liquid below
that supplies you with hope and new life

Let the mist of your dreams clear from your eyes
as your lips curl into a bursting grin
At last you can open your hands and share
the joy that was placed in them long ago

And the voice of your ancestors
will be released from your mouth

And the heart of your ancestors
will beat in your chest.

Orangutan

The deep orange hairs sway in the breeze
as if they were green blades of grass
covering a vast expanse of warm skin
and dancing to the forest's rhythm.

Big round obsidian orbs gleam
in the early morning light
as pink lips purse together
surveying the spread of trees.

With a screech they are off,
strong arms thrust upwards,
hands grasping limbs and
hooking quickly from one
branch to the next in a wide
and graceful swing.

I can only smile at such joy
wishing I too could climb trees
with such ease.

Encounter in Old English

The lovely creature swayed past him
on the steamy street as the man
looked in silent apodyopsis

Sparkling drops began to fall
from the ice blue skies above
He breathed deeply of the petrichor
and watched this callipygian goddess
Unable to hold back the sound
that began to bombilate from his lips

It grew to abderian laughter as his
heart started to pound with
an intense basorexia

But before he could catch his breath
she turned the corner out of sight
This vixen who had abraided his soul
leaving him alone on a crowded street
with the hustle of a saturday morning
and gentle psithurism.

Written Monday, February 20, 2012 - 9:39pm

apodyopsis... the act of mentally undressing someone
petrichor... the smell of rain on dry ground
callipygian... to have a well-shaped buttocks
bombilate... to loudly hum or buzz continuously
abderian... given to incessant idiotic laughter
basorexia... an overwhelming desire to kiss
abraid... to awaken or rouse
psithurism... the sound of wind in trees or rustling leaves

Celebrations to honor you
seem so inadequate to express my gratitude
and my joy upon discovering

In the midst of revelry
or the quietness of candlelight
I can look into your eyes
and respond to your inquisitive glance
with a reassuring and affirming look
to tell you how thankful I am
that you were born.

And when I see your parents next time,
I will give them a solid high five.

Under the waves

The captain cranked the wheel around
Upon the hearing of a sound
That grew from faint to rumbling
Beneath his ship, he heard her sing

The shadow dark beneath the waves
Flitting in and out of caves
Her skin was gleaming green and gold
Her splendor, tales had not foretold

The sailors leaned over the rail
And caught a glimpse of shining tail
Their hearts beat faster as they saw
Her golden eyes, her beauty raw

Her cherry lips began to part
Again releasing divine art
Vibrations from her melodies
Brought the sailors to their knees

in hues of freshly roasted coffee.

Suddenly a strawberry pushes it's way

sparkling in burgundy and fire-hydrant red,
with golden jewels to decorate it's flesh.

Colliding to create the perfect balance

of freshness and richness,

There is no sound, except for my heavy breathing

I pedal harder to follow you, knowing that the faster we go,

In the meantime, I enjoy the stillness of a winter night,

Small Beginnings

In quietness and solitude
the humble seed begins it's life
With warmth and darkness muffling
the gentle wind from emerald seas

A mighty urge grows stronger now
Within it's core so firm below
And spreading out it's awkward arms
It seeks to find it's destiny

Ever still the seed moves on
By stretching sturdy tendrils up
to reach the blazing light above
immersing in it's energy

At last the moment has arrived
to break the surface of the clay
The shock of daylight hits the seed
A heady surge of ecstasy

The solid roots now flourishing
as leaves and stems luxuriate
in hues of lime and ruby red
Unaware of it's immensity

The shadows now beneath it's boughs
Give rest to earth, and now allow
a weary head to lean upon
the peace, a perfect remedy

Huyana

There are marks upon his forearms
Where she had desperately clung to life.
She finally releases her iron grip
and takes one last breath.

Zigzags and triangles around her eyes
gently shift as tension and despair fade,
melting into innocent peace.

He curls the locks of her auburn hair
around his rough and callused fingers.
Shimmering tears force their way
down his dusty cheeks.

He smoothes the folds of her dress
and delicately touches the beads
encircling her slender neck.
The beads that he had tied so lovingly
around her on the day they met.

A faint cry startles him,
stirring his heart from his reverie,
and he looks down at the
baby wrapped in his arms.

In a soft voice, he whispers,
You shall be Huyana,
For your were born under

forgetting wise words that
admonish us not to speak in anger.

And how did these sweet little peas

When you leave the room so I can change
Into that thin blue gown in preparation
For the uncomfortable but necessary

I feel as though you must have some

Like reading journal articles or

But you're probably just standing
At the reception desk
Chatting about your weekend
And flipping thorough a random
Magazine from the waiting room.

Or maybe you're starting into space
Thinking about your next vacation.

Your little head glows white blonde
As you bob between pillows and blankets

And grabbing a fistful of fur in those
Tiny, squishy pink hands of yours.

With a bright red maraschino ball

In unison chanting a celebratory song.

And for that moment

Beauty in the eye beholds
a yellowbird that chides and scolds
of coming frost that greets the day
and warns the bird to fly away

Fresh Air

You make me want to leave the house
Walk out the door and
Breathe fresh air into my lungs
because the air is direct,
Pure, honest and life-giving.
When I have had my fill,
I can come back inside
to your house of secrets.

New Year

Happiness
Like a blossoming flower
Arrives
with freshness of the new year
Encircling my heart with
the warmth of a thousand
radiant candles
Lighting a new path
Saturated with hope
